Summary. Efficacy of Oleozón in the treatment of tinea pedis was demonstrated comparing with ketoconazole cream (Nizoral®). A complete clinical and mycological cure was obtained in 75% and 81% for Oleozón and ketoconazole, respectively, with no significant differences between both groups. No side-effects or bacterial super-infections were observed. Six months after the end of the treatment no recurrence was observed in the Oleozón group.

Introduction. Tinea pedis is a frequently occurring disease which produces different tissue lesions. This skin infection is caused by fungi of the genera Trichophyton, Epidermophyton and Microsporum, often resistant to treatment, and there can be frequent relapses. Taking into account the properties of Oleozon, acontrolled clinical evaluation, comparing this product with ketoconazole, was performed.

Patients and methods. Two hundred outpatients were diagnosed and divided into two groups of 100 patients each, and treated with:

  1. Oleozón
  2. Ketoconazole

Results.  At the end of the six weeks of treatment no significant differences were found between Oleozón and ketoconazole; both treatments can be useful for the treatment of tinea pedis. Mycological cultures performed 6 months after the end of the treatment were negative in all patients treated with Oleozón, whereas patients treated with ketoconazole had 4% recurrence.

Discussion. This study demonstrates that the antimycotic properties of Oleozón are similar to those of ketoconazole, in 200 patients affected with tinea pedis. Lack of relapses in patients treated with Oleozón suggest that Oleozón is superior to ketoconazole and other commonly used topical antimycotics, taking into account that these patients had a mean value of four relapses per year. Oleozón, for its fungicidal capacity, lack of side-effects and low-cost therapy, is a good alternative for superficial fungus infections.
